Kael’thas Sunstrider | Woes of Phase 1 through 3

After a few silly wipes to warm us up to Kael’thas, we had a couple of good attempts (#7 and #8). Things definitely get better when the weapons are controlled and downed quickly in phase 2.

Group:

  • Rogue
  • Rogue
  • Rogue
  • Druid (feral)
  • Shaman

Phase 1 Totems:

The only melee damage needed in this phase are vs. Lord Sanguinar and Master Engineer Telonicus.

  • Tremor Totem
  • Windfury Totem
  • Mana Spring Totem
  • Searing Totem

Phase 2 Totems:

Melee focus is on the Cosmic Infuser (mace), then Infinity Blades (dagger), Warp Slicer (sword), and finally Phaseshift Bulwark (shield).

  • Windfury Totem
  • Mana Spring Totem
  • Magma Totem / FireElemental
  • Strength of Earth Totem

Phase 3 Totems:

Run like heck, the sky is falling!

  • Tremor Totem
  • Windfury Totem
  • Mana Spring Totem
  • Searing Totem

Yeah, we made it to phase 4 on both of these good attempts, but didn’t last long with Capernian and Telonicus still running around. Not to mention, Kael’thas was nuking at will too. :)

My basic praises/gripes here are:

  • It’s not a melee friendly fight (aren’t they all?).
  • Ranged can basically contribute effectively to all phases
  • I’m not doing nearly enough dps
  • Heroism/Bloodlust on phase 2 is nice, but I would rather have it more towards the end of the fight (Phases 4 & 5). I know I might get Mind Controlled by Kael’thas after phase 3, but I always like to have it late in a fight for the “FINISH HIM!” Bloodlust dps frenzy. If you do get your Bloodlust/Heroism taken via a Mind Control, then Purge it from Kael’thas quickly! And Purge it from any adds from Phase 3.
  • I like having melee targets assigned before hand so I don’t have to run around like a mad dog trying to dps something that will only contribute <5% vs. what ranged can do

So, I’m asking all my shaman brothers & sisters out there: what tips can you provide that will help me out vs. Kael’thas? I’m looking for looting weapons help, more dps help and anything ‘weird’ that you do to survive this long phased encounter.

    Phases 2 and 3 are the make or break fights.

    It also depends on what order you are bringing down the weapons. We brought down the Bow and Dagger first due to the DPS additions that they bring. After that we levelled out the Staves and the Maces so that they were brought down at about the same time.

    We went after the engineer first, then Sanguinaar, then Thaladred usually collapses around this time and the Warlock chick is last.

    I know you don’t like Heroism blown in Phase 2 but I strongly recommend it. The weapon looting aspect is a huge pain in the ass. As a healer, I STILL have trouble picking up the mace. I find myself having to yell on vent for an extra mace because I just can’t get the right angle and I have to run off to heal. Plus you might have it up again in time for Phase 5. Who knows? :D

    Good points indeed.

    Looks like our troubles now are:

    a) we don’t reliably get to phase 4, sometimes it is smooth, othertimes silly mistakes cost us a bunch and we wipe way before phase 4

    b) phase 2+3 melee order is Cosmic Infuser > Infinity Blades > Warp Slicer > Bulwark > Sunguinar > Telonicus

    I find it hard to pick up the Dagger (Infinity Blades) sometimes, but not too often. I’ll see if I can get a WWS up.

    Im allways in top 5 with 866 dps
    what are you using, 2hander? If so, epic phail
    Also, as an enhancement shaman, you should rock the meters, all the fights arent melee friendly? WTF
    you gotta live with it and dps in consequence, I was 3rd dps on lady vashj, wich isnt a lovely fight for a melee.
    Also, I was 4th dps overall in ssc full cleared and my weapons arent that good, fool’s bane and Fury. If you cant do more dmg then 663 dps , L2P

    sorry if I was rude in the thread before
    You need to use Bloodlust AKA heroism during phase 2 to down as quick as possible the weapon. You must rape the mace and interrupt EARTH SHOCK STFU the mace when it tries to heal, if you gain aggro, tank it with a shield on, healers are there to heal. Kael is hard but its a movement skill check. If your with the warlock tank grp, go at the spot where the lock will tank and wait till L.Sanguinar is at 20-25% and drop woa and FR, then run the fuck out and wait till the chick boss is dead, then run foward to the spot of the engineer. Dps it, ALL DPS MUST STOP IF ANY TANK GETS TOY’ed. During phase 2 the weapons spwn, drop magma totem and keep it down, every single dps is VITAL. As soon the dagger drops, equip it and put a wf on it, during phase 4 TAKE OFF WF and get rdy to dispell MC’s with ur dagger, it might take more then 1 hit to dispell and this is why you dont want the WF. also, you need to use 2x1h weapons, 2handers arent enough good for the dps, I use mine for fun during the trash tho =D god its fun to get a 7k crit with wf :P

    TBH, your guild needs to bring more ranged DPS while learning this encounter. We usually run with 3 locks, 3 mages, one ele shammy, one hunter, and two shadow priests. More locks/mages means the weapons go down faster. More ranged in general means that Thaladred goes down faster in phase 3 (usually the slowest to go down). Also, more ranged means less travel time between advisors during phase 3.

    The fight is pretty much made or broken on how quickly you get the adds down. If you can consistently get 3 or 4 advisors down before Kael pops, then the rest of the fight is really a formality, and you can get down to beating the hell outta that freaky giant blood elf… except during gravity lapses, of course. :)

    Agreed, last time we attempted Kael’thas, we brought like 5 mages and loads of huntards. We had Kael’thas in phase 4, but need to get more help on breaking the MC targets. Breaking MC targets should be priority #1.
